Board of Directors Nominees

Your vision for your service on the Board. In what specific primary areas would you desire to contribute?

"I have been the Treasurer here at SGCC for the past year+. If I am re-elected to the Board, I would expect to continue in my role as Treasurer. We have made significant progress financially in 2024 focusing on fiscal responsibility while providing our membership the best golf experience at the club. I believe my 30+ years of financial leadership can help SGCC succeed both in the short and long term."

What education, past or current experience or success in these areas do you have that will benefit the Club?

"After graduating from the University of Akron with an Accounting degree, I spent 30+ years as a successful Finance Executive in companies that ranged from $15.0M to $7.5B, having been responsible for all financial aspects from financial reporting, cost controls, internal controls, auditing, general accounting, cost accounting, tax, and revenue-enhancing teams. Given my background, I believe I can positively serve the membership and Board, specifically in a finance capacity."

What do you feel are the challenges facing the Club? Where are the opportunities for improving operations?

"We still have fiscal challenges in front of us. I believe our #1 challenge is to continue to define what the membership of SGCC wants our club to be. There are other challenges we are facing such as deferred maintenance, food and beverage style and performance, and full membership. We have made progress in all these areas in 2024, but 2025 will require the same, if not more focus and support by management, the membership, and the BOD to ensure we all have the experience we want."

How can your experience or passion make a positive difference? In your areas of expertise, what specific changes and solutions do you propose?

"To achieve our financial goals for 2025, we must continue to improve and expand a well-vetted budget. We need to think about and run our club as a business. I believe my past experiences will aid the club in successfully navigating the challenges we face."

What would you like to accomplish? Be as specific as you wish. In other areas, what other ideas do you have? What is your vision for the Club’s future?

"When I think of our club, so many positive things come to mind, like the friendliness of the membership, the beauty of our course, our community of Somersett, and the opportunity to play on one of the most challenging courses around. We are extremely fortunate to have all of this on our doorstep. As I look forward, one of the main levers to ensure the health of our club going forward is membership. We need to maintain or exceed full membership with a waitlist to ensure financial health."

How would you contribute generally to the Board and the Club's success?

"As members, we need to embrace the idea that we 'own' the club. It’s our responsibility to make it a success by supporting it financially and by being active and engaging members. My financial experience, both past and current, positions me well to contribute to the Board’s success, particularly through responsible fiscal management."

Your vision for your service on the Board. In what specific primary areas would you desire to contribute?

"My desire to serve on the board of directors comes from my experience as a member of the finance committee over the past year. During this time, I gained valuable insights into the club’s operations – its successes and challenges – and contributed to many meaningful discussions that guided the committee’s recommendations to the board. Now, I am eager to play a more active role in the decision-making process and contribute to the club's future directly. My vision for our club includes achieving financial stability, running a surplus, and continuing to invest in both opportunistic capital improvements and those required by deferred maintenance. I also want to help cultivate a club atmosphere where our food and beverage operations break even or better."

What education, past or current experience or success in these areas do you have that will benefit the Club?

"I hold a B.S. in Accounting from The Ohio State University and an MBA from Harvard Business School, with a focus on finance, investment management, and investment banking. I recently retired after a 39-year career, primarily in insurance. My experience includes leading Allstate’s research center for 25 years, serving as Chief Data Officer for AIG’s life and retirement businesses for five years, and working as Chief Data and Analytics Officer for Employers Insurance in Reno. Most recently, I was the Chief Insurance and Science Officer for CLARA Analytics, an AI-focused company. I also served on the board of directors for Junior State of America from 2013 to 2014."

What do you feel are the challenges facing the Club? Where are the opportunities for improving operations?

"We have made great progress in addressing capital improvements, and I am committed to maintaining our disciplined approach to these investments through the capital charge. One of the board’s key responsibilities is to prioritize how these funds are allocated. Our chef and F&B staff are exceptional and more stable than ever, and I want to make it a priority to showcase this to our members. I believe incentivizing members to dine at the club will allow them to experience the vastly improved dining experience we now offer."

How can your experience or passion make a positive difference? In your areas of expertise, what specific changes and solutions do you propose?

"I believe in our strong management team, and I see the board’s role as focusing on strategic decisions, such as whether to repave the parking lot, rather than micromanaging our general manager and staff. However, it is crucial for the board to hold the G.M. accountable for meeting financial and operational goals. In my thirteen years of board experience with a national non-profit, I have learned that this is the most effective role for a board to play."

What would you like to accomplish? Be as specific as you wish. In other areas, what other ideas do you have? What is your vision for the Club’s future?

"Ultimately, my goal is for the club to be a focal point of our members' lives. I am passionate about ensuring its long-term success and growth. By achieving financial stability, investing in capital improvements, and enhancing member engagement in dining and other club activities, I believe we can make the club an integral part of our community."

How would you contribute generally to the Board and the Club's success?

"My business leadership experience and time on the board of a national non-profit make me a strong candidate for the SGCC board. I welcome your support and input as we work together to ensure a prosperous future for our club."

Your vision for your service on the Board. In what specific primary areas would you desire to contribute?

"I would hope to contribute to a variety of areas while on the board. I believe my previous experience and background will allow me to add value to the governance of the board, operations of golf, and communications with staff and members as well."

What education, past or current experience or success in these areas do you have that will benefit the Club?

"I have been a resident of the area for over 43 years since coming to Reno for my college education. After graduating, I was a teacher, coach, and athletic administrator at Bishop Manogue Catholic HS before moving to local government. I had a career at the City of Reno and Washoe County, primarily in Parks and Recreation, where I oversaw golf courses including Rosewood Lakes, Brookside Golf Course, Washoe Golf Course, and Sierra Sage Golf Course. My work concluded in the Washoe County Executive Office, where I was responsible for the overall County budget, emergency management, legislative affairs, and constituent services with County Commissioners. I believe all these roles and experiences can benefit the board and Somersett Golf and Country Club."

What do you feel are the challenges facing the Club? Where are the opportunities for improving operations?

"I believe the challenges are no different than most in the golf industry. It is challenging to operate golf courses at all levels, including economy, resort, and private golf courses. Growing the game holistically while operating short and long-term in a financially sound position is both a challenge and an opportunity. The initiation of the strategic plan is key, and now the continued defining, execution, and updating of the plan is crucial to SSGCC's success. As a board member, I look forward to participating in this process to improve all club operations."

How can your experience or passion make a positive difference? In your areas of expertise, what specific changes and solutions do you propose?

"My past experience in golf, education, and government/politics, combined with my passion to assist boards and committees in this chapter of my life, is important. Being retired affords me the opportunity to direct my energy into my passions. I do not have any specific changes or solutions at this time. I rely on data-driven solutions and strong communication, so any solutions will come with time and collaboration with other board members."

What would you like to accomplish? Be as specific as you wish. In other areas, what other ideas do you have? What is your vision for the Club’s future?

"I would like to be a contributing member to the board in all functions and see a growing, stable, and enjoyable golf club and community. As far as accomplishments, I would hope to interact with the board, process more information, and use my experience and background to add value to the club and its future."

How would you contribute generally to the Board and the Club's success?

"I believe being a strong team member to the board and functioning as a leader is key. I look forward to adding value to the strategic plan process and communicating with members to keep our club growing."
